NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The No. 1 seed Smith College Pioneers defeated No. 8 MIT, 2-0, in quarterfinal action of the NEWMAC Softball Championship Tournament on Tuesday. The Engineers finish the year with an overall record of 6-21 and a NEWMAC ledger of 2-14.
The Pioneers scored what proved to be the winning run in the bottom of the third inning. Amanda Thompson led off with a single to left field and was replaced by pinch runner Sarah Matari. Deb Sasges singled to center, advancing Matari to second. Chole Pete then doubled to deep center scoring Matari. Smith added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth on a single by Sasges and a double by Sara Wilson.
MIT's best scoring opportunity was in the top of the seventh. With one out, Holly Jeffrey singled to left and Amanda Poteet reached on an error. Smith pitcher Katie Maroney struck out the next batter and the last out was Jeffrey being thrown out at third on a fielder's choice.
Maroney went the distance for Smith in the shutout, giving up five hits and striking out six. Leah Bogsted picked up the loss for MIT as she allowed seven hits and fanned five batters.
