Women's Swimming and Diving Takes Second at MIT Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Despite winning 10 of 20 events, MIT's women's swimming and diving team finished runner-up at the 2009 MIT Invite, held Friday and Saturday in the Zesiger Pool. The host Engineers recorded a score of 863.5, falling well short of the winning squad from New York University (1045).

Tufts University (472.5), Wheaton College (403), Colby College (343), Bowdoin College (318) and Brandeis University (308) rounded out the participating schools.

MIT dominated the relays, winning all five relays and recording NCAA "B" cut times in the 200 Free Relay (1:36.71), 400 Medley Relay (3:58.78) and 800 Free Relay (7:50.19). Freshman Anna Kokensparger broke school records-some her own-en route to four individual wins, four individual "B" cut times, and seven wins in her seven races.

NYU's win resulted from its ability to consistently place a number of swimmers at the top of the leaderboard. The Violets put at least two swimmers in the top-ten of every individual event, including a 1-2-3-4 sweep of the 1650 Free and five of the top six athletes in the 500 Free. NYU freshman Tatum Gormley scored her team's only "B"-cut time with her winning swim of 4:37.85 in the 400 IM.

Tufts diver Lindsay Gardel gave the Jumbos a win in three-meter diving (236.35) and placed second in one-meter (252.35), barely losing to Kelly Dietz from NYU (258.10).

Wheaton's Dania Piscetta was the only swimmer to stop NYU and MIT from sweeping all eighteen swimming events. Piscetta won the 100 Free (53.85) and her second-place effort in the 100 Fly (58.39) was a "B" cut time. She also made the 50 Free cut with her opening swim (24.38) of the 200 Free Relay.

Colby senior Danielle Carlson recorded four top ten finishes in five individual events, including a third-place performance in the 400 IM (4:47.41). Carlson's contributions to four relay teams also added to the Mules' scoring.

Sophomore Angela Chui was a standout for Brandeis, finishing top-three in the 200 IM (2:12.12), 400 IM (4:42.98), 100 Back (1:01.32) and 200 Back (2:13.32).

Bowdoin's Katherine Foley had a pair of runner-up finishes with her times in the 500 Free (5:15.30) and 200 Free (1:58.47).

This weekend's meet marked the final competition of the calendar year for most of the teams competing. MIT hits the water again on January 8, 2010, when it hosts Wheaton College for dual meet action.
