MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Years of practice and five months of preparation have come down to one week of racing, and for some, as few as 20 seconds will determine who has the right to be considered the nation’s best. Over the next four days, hundreds of student-athletes will gather at the University Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Minnesota for the 2010 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Beloit College and The College of Wooster. Among them, 15 MIT athletes are looking to prove that the nation’s brightest students are also some of its fastest swimmers.
Ten MIT men and five women will compete at this week’s competition. Among them, freshman Anna Kokensparger enters the meet seeded among the top ten in all three of her individual races. For the first time, an Engineer enters the meet as the top seed in any event, as Kokensparger’s conference-winning time in the 200 IM (2:04.90) is the fastest among D-III women this year.
On the men’s side MIT will be represented by five previous All-Americans, including Rastislav Racz, who looks to become only the third swimmer in Tech’s history to receive honors in the same event four times and the first since Andy Renshaw (100 Fly) and Bob Shoenlein (100 Breast) accomplished the feat in the early 80’s. The Cardinal and Gray could also capitalize on three relay teams seeded among the top ten (200 Medley, 200 Free and 400 Medley).
