Cambridge, Mass. –Joanna Yeh and Beth Stavely have each been honored as New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference athletes of the week, announced Monday, January 18th. Yeh was tabbed as the women's swimmer of the week while Stavely was named the top women's diver.
Yeh, a freshman, won four events for the Engineers on Sunday as they defeated both Springfield College and Coast Guard Academy. She took the 200 yard butterfly in 2:11.43, the 100 yard freestyle in 53.95, and the 100 yard fly in 59.19. The native of Frederick, Md. was then part of the MIT team that took first in the 400 yard freestyle relay, in a time of 3:38.61. Yeh's performance Sunday follows up a strong showing at Colby College on Saturday, where she won on two relay teams and individually in the 200 yard fly (2:11.78).
Stavely, a senior from West Chester, Pa., made two NCAA cuts in Sunday's tri-meet between the Engineers, Pride and Bears. She won the 1 meter diving competition with a score of 302, then took second place on the three meter board with a score of 284.25. At Colby College on Saturday, Stavely won the 3 meter diving competition with a 215.40 score.
The MIT women's swimming and diving team has compiled a perfect 8-0 record this season, including a first place finish in the seven-team MIT Invitational. The Engineers will honor their seniors with their final home meet of the season on Saturday, January 22nd. MIT will host Tufts University with a meet starting at 1:00 PM.
