Women’s Swimming Cruises Past Colby

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT women's swimming and diving team was back in the pool for its first dual meet of 2012 this afternoon against Colby College in the Zesiger Center Pool. The Engineers had no problems with the Mules as they won every event but one to take a 237-57 win.

Junior Anna Kokensparger (Omaha, Neb.) won three individual events and was also part of a winning relay for MIT. She started the day off by teaming with sophomores Katelyn Rossick (Middletown, Md.), Christy Rogers (Bend, Ore.) and Calley Murphy (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) to capture the 400 Medley Relay in a time of 4:00.22.

Kokensparger captured her first individual event in the 200 Fly, touching first with a time of 2:11.00. She then went on to win both the 50 Fly and 200 IM events, taking the 50 Fly in 26.42 and the 200 IM in 2:10.64. Finishing in second in the event for MIT was freshman Whitney Loo (Huntington Beach, Calif.) who turned in a season best effort of 2:19.03.

Freshman Emily Ryan (Indianapolis, Ind.) continued her strong first season with a pair of wins for MIT. She took her first in the 1,000 Free, besting the field by over 23 seconds with her effort of 10:20.33. She later came back to capture the 100 Free as well, clocking a 54.53.

Junior Elise Stave (Chapel Hill, N.C.) swept the diving events as she also picked up a pair of first-place finishes for the Engineers. She started with a score of 233.65 to take the 1-meter event, and then finished with the 3-meter title with a final score of 226.30.

Rossick was in on three wins as well for MIT, taking part in the victorious 400 Free and 400 Medley Relay teams, anchoring the 400 Free Relay squad that posted a winning time of 3:41.68. She also took home the win in the 200 Free, turning in a time of 1:58.46.

In the 200 Back event Rogers turned in a winning time of 2:09.29 that led a 1-2-3 sweep for the Engineers that included Rossick and freshman Jane He (Yardley, Pa.).

MIT will be back in the pool tomorrow as well as it travels to Springfield College for a meet against the host Pride and Coast Guard at 1:00 p.m.
