NORTON, Mass. - On the opening day of the two-session Wheaton Invite, the MIT women's swimming and diving team performed well, winning a number of events. Over the weekend, the Engineers will compete against Wheaton College, Tufts University and Clark University in 19 events.
This will be the last competition MIT will participate in until it hosts the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) championship from February 14-17.
The first event MIT competed in was the 200 yard Individual Medley, where the Engineers took first, sixth and 14th place. Junior Christy Rogers (Bend, Ore.) touched the wall first with a time of 2:11.79, junior Nora Darago (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) was sixth with a time of 2:20.02 and freshman Ellie Laukaitis (Williston, Vt.) came 14th in 2:23.70. Senior Elina Hu (Oshkosh, Wis.) was the lone Engineer in the 50 yard freestyle, touching first in 25.25.
MIT ended the opening day of the invite with a win in the 400 yard medley relay, coming into the wall in 4:12.65. Wheaton's A relay came into the wall soon after with a time of 4:15.33.
The Engineers will return to the pool tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. for the second session of the meet, starting with the 200 yard medley relay.
