Women's Swimming and Diving Splits NEWMAC Tri-Meet

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - MIT's women's swimming and diving team, ranked No. 20 nationally, split a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tri-meet on Sunday afternoon at Springfield College. The Engineers defeated the United States Coast Guard Academy, 221-79, but were narrowly edged by the host Pride, 154-146.
Springfield downed Coast Guard, 212-88, in the afternoon's other match-up.
MIT's dual meet record moved to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the NEWMAC with the split, while Springfield improved to 5-6 and 4-0 and Coast Guard fell to 2-7 and 2-4.
Freshman Amy Jacobi once again led MIT with three victories, including two in individual events. The rookie finished first in both the 100-yard backstroke (1:01.62) and 100-yard butterfly (59.97) before leading off the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay team along with Sarah King, Ashley Pinchinat and Sasha Brophy. The quartet touched the wall at 3:44.91, ahead of all competitors.
Junior Nicole O'Keeffe was strong in the 400-yard individual medley, clocking in at 4:49.48 to earn maximum points.
Senior Doria Holbrook, the defending three-meter diving National Champion, was tops on the three-meter board with a score of 287.80 points.
The Engineers will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 26, when they will travel to Medford, Mass., to take on Tufts University at 1:00 p.m.
