Women's Swimming Moves to 4-0
Nov. 20, 2004
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Kate Thornton won three individual events to lead MIT women' swimming and diving to a commanding victory in a tri-match against Bowdoin College and Babson College at Zesiger Pool. The Engineers upended Bowdoin, 184-114, and defeated the Beavers, 220-78.
Thornton opened the afternoon with another 20+ second victory in the 1000 free, an event she has conquered every meet this season. She ensured closing as the day's high-point getter after securing two more first-place finishes in the 500 free and 50 breast.
Freshmen Sasha Brophy and Doria Holbrook also won multiple events to pace the Engineers' attack. Brophy put pop into Tech's sprint corps by taking first in the 50 and 100 free. In one of the day's most exciting races, Brophy also finished second in the 200 free despite swimming a season-best 1:57.35.
A week after garnering MIT's first NCAA qualification, Holbrook swept the one and three-meter diving events, outdueling senior teammate Ashley Rothenberg in both victories.
