NORTON, Mass. - Dawn Gerken was named NEWMAC Women's Swimming Coach of the Year after leading MIT to a second-place finish at the 2006 NEWMAC Championships. National power Springfield College won an unprecedented sixth consecutive team crown with Wellesley College finishing 140 points behind the Engineers for third in the standings. During the three-day competition, the Engineers set 10 Institute records and qualified four swimmers and a diver for the NCAA Championships.
Gerken led the Engineers to a regular-season record of 9-2, including a 4-1 slate in the conference one year after pacing MIT to an 8-2 ledger. Under Gerken's tutelage, the Engineers have finished second overall at the conference championship every season, while she has led both the men's and women's teams to 15 All-America honors. This marks the second time in three years that the women's program will send five student-athletes to the NCAA Division III Championships.
