CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - This weekend, MIT played host to the International Tennis Association (ITA) New England Regional Championships. In the singles draw, Kristen Alotta of Williams defeated Julia Browne of Tufts [6-1, 6-1] to win the tournament. Browne would not leave empty-handed as she and teammate Meghan McCooey beat out Grace Baljon and Taylor French of Williams to claim the doubles title [9-8(0)].
Alotta's run to the finals was almost cut short in the quarter-final when she dropped the first set to MIT's Leslie Hanson before rallying to win [2-6, 6-0 (10-8)]. She then downed #2 seed Baljon, and #4 seed Brittany Berckes of Amherst to win her spot in the final.
Before reaching the final, top-seeded Browne only dropped one set when she won her quarter-final match [6-2, 2-6, 6-2] over Middlebury's Tori Aiello. Browne qualified for the final with a [7-6(3), 6-2] win over the #3 seed Nicole Pontee from Vassar.
On the doubles side, Browne and McCooey rallied from a 5-2 deficit to tie the match at 8-8. With the momentum in their favor, the Jumbos swept the tiebreak for the championship [9-8(0)].
In the individual consolation bracket, Jamie Haar and Brittney Faber of Middlebury both advanced to the final and elected to play their match on Tuesday. Middlebury's pair of Aiello and Anna Burke won their final match over Anuja Ankola and Jennifer Ouyang of Amherst to win the doubles consolation.
