MIT Women’s Tennis Opens Season with Victory over Smith

Cambridge, Mass. – The MIT women's tennis team started off their 2010 campaign with a 7-2 victory over Smith College at the DuPont tennis courts.

The Engineers took two out of three doubles matches and dropped only one of their singles contests en route to the victory. The Pioneers fell to 0-1 in the first contest of the season for the two NEWMAC schools.

It was two freshmen, Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu, who led the way for MIT, sweeping their matches in first doubles together with an 8-1 victory over Jaimi Inskeep and Gianna Teague. The pair then split up and captured matching straight set victories. Quisenberry defeat Inskeep 6-1, 6-2 at first singles and Hsu beat Nicole Anderson at second singles by the same score.

Only two of the singles contests went to a third set, with Eunice Zhao capturing the only singles point for Smith by outlasting Jenny Dohlman 6-2, 2-6, 10-8.

Also winning singles contests for the Engineers were Katie O'Neal (6-2, 6-3), Melissa Diskin (6-3, 4-6, 10-5), and Hillary Jenny (6-1, 6-3), while Jen Rees and Dohlman (8-4) picked up the other point at third doubles.
