Cambridge, Mass. -- The MIT women's tennis team improved to 3-0 overall and in New England Woman's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play with a slim 5-4 win over the Babson College Beavers. It was the first loss of the season for Babson, who falls to 4-1 (2-1 NEWMAC).
Babson grabbed a 2-1 lead in doubles competition, as only the Engineer's top doubles team of Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu were victorious (8-3). Babson junior Ashley Lake and senior captain Monica Mercer recorded an 8-3 win at number two and sophomore Mikaela Stamas teamed with first-year Inna Loseva on an 8-6 triumph at number three.
Quisenberry had no difficulties at first singles, but MIT still trailed 3-2 after Mercer defeated Melissa Diskin, 6-0, 6-3, at number four singles. The Engineers moved in front with wins at both the two and three slots. Katie O'Neal won in straight sets at number three while Julia Hsu came back from losing the second set in a tiebreak and swept the third set 6-0 at second singles.
Babson tied the overall match again when Stamas beat Hillary Jenny at number five, 6-4, 6-1, but MIT's Jen Rees outlasted Lake in a three-set thriller in the sixth and final singles match. After dropping the first set 1-6, Rees won the next two sets by matching 6-3 scores to clinch the victory for the Engineers.
MIT will next play this Saturday when they host Mount Holyoke College, while Babson will play host to Smith College.
