Women’s Tennis Ends NEWMAC Season with Loss to Wheaton

Cambridge, Mass. – The Engineers women's tennis team finished their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) season with a 7-2 loss at the hands of Wheaton College. The loss drops MIT's conference record to 5-2, while Wheaton finishes a perfect 7-0 in the NEWMAC.

The visiting Lyons swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead going into singles play. Catherine Teague and Sarah Geocaris, reigning NEWMAC doubles team of the week, defeated Lauren Quisenberry and Julia Hsu by an 8-5 score in the top matchup.

At first singles, Quisenberry was able to grab one of the points for MIT, defeating Teague 6-2, 6-2. With the win, Quisenberry finishes the conference schedule with an unblemished slate. In fact, in seven conference matches, the freshman has not dropped a set.

Melissa Diskin defeated Allesandra DiOrio in a three set affair, winning the first set 6-3 before dropping the second by a 4-6 margin. Diskin was able to battle back and win a super tie-break 13-11 to salvage one more point for the Engineers.

Geocaris did not have the troubles of her doubles partner, beating Hsu at second singles (7-6, 6-0), while Wheaton's Lyndsay Cooke took care of Katie O'Neal at third singles 6-2, 6-2. Hillary Jenny and Jen Rees also fell independently at fifth and sixth singles for the Engineers and together at third doubles to DiOrio and Ellen Van Faasen (8-3).

Next up for both squads is the NEWITT Tournament, which will be held this coming weekend at Amherst College.
