Northampton, Mass. – It was a strong start to the 2011-12 season for the #22 MIT women's tennis team today as the Engineers swept past Smith College by a 9-0 score in NEWMAC Conference action. The Engineers dropped just one set during the match to the Pioneers in the first contest of the season for both squads.
In doubles actions MIT came up with a pair of quick points, getting 8-1 wins in both the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles matches. The duo of freshman Juana Becerra (Bucaramanga, Colombia) and freshman Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) finished the doubles sweep for MIT with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
Sophomore Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christy, Texas) picked up the first singles win of the day for MIT with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jordan Dubin at No. 1. Freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) was successful in her MIT singles debut, also dropping just one game at No. 2 with a 6-1, 6-0 win to cinch the match for the Engineers. At No. 4 Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) took her match by the same score, while Kong scored a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 5. Senior Anastasia Vishnevetsky (Orange, Conn.) won at No. by a 6-3, 6-3 score, while Becerra completed the sweep for the Engineers with a 6-1, 3-6, 10-1 victory over Eunice Zhao.
MIT will return to the court on Sept. 17 when it hosts Clark University in a NEWMAC Conference match at 1:00 p.m. Smith also returns to action on Sept. 17 when it travels to Wheaton College for a 1:00 p.m. contest.
