Cambridge, Mass. – MIT's No. 22 ranked women's tennis team made it two for two at the start of the 2011-12 season as it took an 8-1 win over NEWMAC opponent Clark this afternoon. Senior Anastasia Vishnevetsky (Orange, Conn.) was one of three Engineers to take her singles match in straight sets without dropping a game.
MIT (2-0, 2-0 NEWMAC) swept the three doubles matches, with the duo of sophomore Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) and freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) getting things started with an 8-1 decision over Julia Bergeron and Virginia Cook at No. 2. The Engineers also took an 8-1 win at No. 3 and an 8-4 victory at No. 1 to complete the sweep.
Hsu picked up the first win in singles for MIT, getting the 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 over Cooke. Vishnevetsky followed close behind with her identical 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Bergeron that put MIT up 5-0 and clinched the match for the Engineers.
Freshman Juana Becerra (Bucaramanga, Colombia) was the other MIT player to take a 6-0, 6-0 win, getting her decision at No. 6 singles over Martha Ziemer. Also winning in singles for the Engineers were freshman Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.), a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 2, and freshman Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) who took a 6-2, 6-0 win at No 5.
Clark (0-3, 0-2 NEWMAC) picked up its point of the day in the final match decided when Gaby Suriano took a 6-1, 4-6, 13-11 decision over sophomore Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christy, Texas).
MIT will return to action on Sept. 22 when it hosts Tufts University in at 4:00 p.m.
