CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A strong showing at this weekend's ITA New England Regional Championships by the MIT women's tennis team has given the Engineers a sweep of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference weekly women's tennis awards. Junior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) won her second consecutive Singles Player of the Week award and teamed with freshman Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) for Doubles Team of the Week honors.
In singles play at the ITA Championships, Quisenberry had the best showing of any NEWMAC player, advancing to the Round of 16. She started the tournament off with an impressive win against NEWMAC foe Erica Choo of Wellesley College, 6-0, 6-0. In the second round she faced off against Safi Aly from Amherst College. After a 6-1 win in the first set, Quisenberry held off Aly in the second set, 7-6 (5) to advance to the Round of 16. There she faced No. 3 seed Nancy Worley from Williams. Worley won the first set, 6-3, and was ahead 2-0 in the second when Quisenberry retired from the match, ending her run.
In doubles play Quisenberry and Tam scored a first round victory for the Engineers, taking an 8-2 decision over Freeman/Whitaker of Babson. Reaching the Round of 16, the pair fell to a team that wound up reaching the finals, Newman/Pangalos from Amherst, in an 8-4 decision.
