MIT Women’s Tennis Rolls Past Babson, 7-2

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Playing on the road against a team with just one conference loss, the MIT women's  tennis  team came out swinging at Babson where the Engineers broke open a close match in the singles competition to take a 7-2 victory. Freshman Sunnie Lampl (Bluemont, Va.) won in both doubles and singles, with her singles victory clinching the win for MIT.

MIT (6-1, 5-0 NEWMAC) took the first point of the afternoon when its No. 1 doubles team of junior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and junior Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) took an 8-4 win over Alex Freeman and Sarah Whitaker. Babson came right back to tie the match in the No. 3 contest when its duo of Minte Tamoshunas and Victoria Lorido downed sophomore Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) and freshman Meghana Vasireddy (Golden Valley, Minn.), 8-6. In one of the closest matches of the day, the Engineers' No. 2 team of Lampl and sophomore Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) pulled out an exciting 9-8 (7-5) decision over Alexis  Ferraro and Tori Paolino.

Armed with the 2-1 lead going into singles, MIT picked up the three wins it needed to clinch the win in the first three matches that were finished. Quisenberry finished off Freeman at No. 1 by a 6-2, 6-2 score before Kong put the Engineers within a point of the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 over Whitaker. Lampl then delivered the clinching win at No. 6, taking a 6-4, 6-0 decision over Victoria Lorido.

MIT made it four straight wins in singles as freshman Alana Peters (Kenilworth, Ill.) won her No. 5 match by a 6-4, 6-1 score over Tamoshunas. Babson broke the streak of MIT wins in the No. 4 match when Ferraro fought off a comeback attempt by Hsu with a 6-1, 4-6, 10-8 win. Dutt finished off the match for MIT with a win at No. 3, taking a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Paolino.

MIT will take a break from NEWMAC play this weekend when it travels to Amherst College for the NEWITT Tournament. Babson will not play again until October 16 when it travels to Wellesley for a NEWMAC contest with the Blue.
