MIT Downs Caltech to Close out California Trip, 8-1

PASADENA, Calif. – The MIT women's tennis team concluded its spring break trip to California today with a match at Caltech, in which the No. 22 Engineers swept the doubles matches and took five of the six singles contests to come away with an 8-1 win. MIT improved to 13-2 with the victory while Caltech fell to 4-6.

MIT started strong in doubles play with its No. 2 team of senior Candace Wu (Yorba Linda, Calif.) and junior Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) blanked their opponents, 8-0. The No. 3 team for the Engineers, freshman Meghana Vasireddy (Golden Valley, Minn.) and sophomore Michelle Dutt (Gurnee, Ill.) scored an 8-3 win in their match for the second point of the day for MIT. It was a close battle at No. 1 where the MIT duo of junior Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and freshman Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) managed to squeak past their opponents with a 9-7 decision to make it a clean sweep of the doubles points.

In singles play all of the matches were decided in straight sets. At the bottom of the lineup the Engineers scored two 6-0, 6-0 wins as freshman Iris Zhuang (Allen, Texas) and Ava Soleimany (Newport Beach, Calif.) each shutout their counterparts in the Nos. 5 and 6 matches to clinch the match for MIT.

At the top of the lineup sophomore Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) took a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Monica Li. At No. 2 Caltech got on the board as Rebekah Kitto scored a 6-1, 6-2 win over Tam. That would prove to be the only point the Beavers would get, however, as the Engineers took the other two singles matches. At No. 3 it was Vasireddy securing a 6-1, 6-0 win over Stephanie Kwan and at No. 4 it was freshman Alana Peters (Kenilworth, Ill.) who captured a 6-3, 6-2 win over Michelle Lee.

After returning home, MIT will be in action again on the weekend of April 5 when it will play at the Wellesley Invitational.
