MIT Powers Past Wheaton, 8-1
NORTON, Mass. – It was another successful venture on the road for the MIT women's tennis team as it defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference foe Wheaton College by a final of 8-1. With the win the Engineers remain undefeated and clinched the regular season conference title for a second straight year.
MIT (7-0, 7-0 NEWMAC) got off to a fast start with a sweep of the doubles matches. The Engineers picked up two quick 8-1 decisions in the Nos. 2 and 3 matches before seniors Lauren Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) completed the sweep with an 8-3 decision over junior Alexandra Marlowe (Mesa, Ariz.) and senior Lyndsay Cooke (Bakersfield, Calif.).
In singles play Elysa Kohrs (Half Moon Bay, Calif.) scored the first point for MIT with a convincing 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 2 over senior Morgan Bell (Gloucester, Mass.). Playing at No. 5 junior Vynnie Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) clinched the team victory for the Engineers, surrendering just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over sophomore Caroline DiNicola-Fawley (Brattleboro, Vt.).
Wheaton (6-2, 4-2 NEWMAC) picked up its point in the No. 1 match when Quisenberry was forced to retire in her contest with Marlowe after taking a 7-6 (2), 1-0 advantage. Freshmen Wendi Kong (Cupertino, Calif.) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6 for the sixth point of the day for MIT, with freshman Krystal Lai (Irvine, Calif.) and sophomore Victoria Tam (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) also scoring straight sets wins for the Engineers at Nos. 4 and 3 to complete the scoring.
MIT will play its first non-conference dual match in its next outing as it hosts Tufts University on Tuesday, October 8 at 4:00 p.m. Wheaton will take on Babson College on the road in its next contest on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
