A four-time NEWMAC Women’s Tennis Coach of the Year, Carol Matsuzaki has guided the MIT program for a record 14 seasons. The winningest coach in MIT women’s tennis history, she has compiled a 163-82 dual match record, with her teams recording winning records in all but one season.

Matsuzaki steered the Engineers to four consecutive NEWMAC Championship titles from 1999-02 and has coached numerous individuals to appearances at the NCAA Championships. Following the 2006-07 season, she was named the Division III Northeast Region Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Women’s Coach of the Year. In 2011, the team had an undefeated spring season (11-0), finished the year ranked #22 in the nation in division III, and won the ITA National Sportsmanship Award. This past season led the Engineers to the finals of the NEWMAC Championship for the ninth time in 11 tries.

Hailing from Los Angeles, Calif., Matsuzaki graduated from MIT in 1995 with degrees
in biology and literature. Matsuzaki captained the tennis team her senior year and was the NEW 8 Player of the Year in 1995. In addition to varsity tennis, she played on the varsity squash team.

Matsuzaki received her graduate degree in sports psychology from Boston University
in 1997. In 2004, she authored the book “Tennis Fundamentals”. Part of Human Kinetics’ Sports Fundamentals series, “Tennis Fundamentals” teaches the basic skills and tactics to help readers participate in the sport quickly.
