No. 23 MIT Defeats Bates, 9-0

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Following a five-hour battle that featured four three-set matches, nationally-ranked No. 23 MIT emerged with a 9-0 victory over Bates College on Saturday. The Engineers improved to 9-3 on the year following their spring season opener.

The regionally-ranked No. 4 duo of Leslie Hansen and Mariah Hoover notched an 8-2 decision in the top spot as Karina Pikhart and Melissa Diskin picked up an 8-3 victory in the No. 3 position. Anisa McCree and Yi Wang completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 win.

Hansen dropped only one game (6-0, 6-1) and Diskin posted a 6-3, 6-1 decision in MIT's lone straight-set victories. In the No. 2 slot, Hoover registered scores of 7-6(3), 6-7(3), 6-2 as Yang won, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. After a 7-5 loss, McCree bounced back with totals of 6-2 and 6-3 in the No. 5 position. Pikhart wrapped up the match with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

In exhibition doubles play, Kerry Weinberg and Jenny Dohlman fell, 8-5. Dohlman went on to record an 8-4 singles win as Jen Rees topped her foe, 8-2.
