Women's Tennis Wins Nail-biter Against Bates

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT began its spring season by defeating Bates College, 5-4, in a match that lasted five and a half hours on Saturday. Jusleen Karve secured the winning point for the Engineers at No. 6 singles with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 victory.

Tech (9-3) got off to an excellent start by taking a 2-1 lead after doubles action. Joanna MacKay and Elaine Ni posted an 8-5 win in the No. 1 slot while Serena Lin and Jill Konowich lost by the same margin in the second position. Karve and Jaclyn Cichon combined forces for an 8-3 victory in the last match.

Playing in the No. 1 singles position, Lin won 6-2, 6-2. Ni fell in the next spot, 6-4, 6-4. Cichon played a great match, winning 7-5, 6-4, in the No. 3 slot. Konowich and MacKay lost their matches by scores of 6-4, 7-6 (6) and 7-5, 6-4.
