No. 28 MIT Tops Trinity, 7-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The nationally-ranked No. 28 MIT women's tennis team defeated Trinity College, 7-2, in a non-conference match on Saturday. With the win, the Engineers improved to 12-5 overall while the Bantams fell to 7-4. Anisa McCree and Yi Wang led off the match with an 8-2 decision over Trinity's Sarah Gould and Arielle Leben in the No. 2 doubles position. The Bantams picked up a point after Sydney Meckler and Robyn Williams defeated Melissa Diskin and Karina Pikhart, 8-3, in the third slot. The Engineers regained the lead after Leslie Hansen and Mariah Hoover edged out Brenna Driscoll and Amanda Tramont, 8-6, in the top spot. In singles action, Hansen registered a 6-4, 6-2 win over Driscoll in the No. 1 position. Hoover outlasted Tramont, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, while Gould defeated Diskin, 6-3, 6-4, to prevent a singles sweep for the Engineers. Wang posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the No. 4 slot as McCree fought off Olivia Merns, 6-4, 7-6 (5). In the No. 6 spot, Pikhart took the opening set (6-2) before Meckler captured the next frame (6-3). Pikhart bounced back by taking the decisive set, 11-9. In exhibition play, the Bantams were victorious in all three matches. Merns and Jillian Steckloff collaborated for an 8-5 decision over Katie Smyth and Jen Rees as Stickloff followed this performance by defeating Kerry Weinberg, 8-0. Kristina Pappas closed the day with a hard-fought 9-8 (3) win against Emma Rosen. Next up for MIT will be a home match against NYU on Saturday, April 12.
