Leslie Hansen Advances to Semifinals of ITA New England Championship

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Leslie Hansen became the third person in the history of the MIT women's tennis program and the first in four years to advance to the semifinal round of the Division III Wilson/ITA Women's New England Championship held this past weekend at the DuPont Tennis Courts. Also representing the Engineers at the tournament were Mariah Hoover, Yi Wang, Liz Denys, and Anisa McCree.

Hansen, seeded No. 3, opened the competition with a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win over Shivani Saxena (Wellesley), the eventual consolation singles champion. She then defeated Carlissa King (Amherst), 6-2, 6-4, Nicole Pontee (Vassar), 6-4, 6-1, and Meghan McCooey (Tufts), 4-6, 6-0, 5-4 (ret). Hansen fell to No. 2 Cary Gibson (Williams), 6-1, 6-3, who went on to capture the title.

Hoover defeated Diana Fiumefreddo (Smith) in straight sets (6-2, 6-2) and outlasted Mari Homma (Tufts), 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (7). Hoover's run came to an end when she lost to Gibson, 7-5, 6-1. In her tournament debut, Denys swept Courtney Farrell (Babson), 6-1, 6-2, and then retired in her match versus Nikki Reich (Williams), trailing 4-1. Wang lost her opening match to Laken King (Amherst), 6-0, 6-3, and then fell to Danielle Coleman (Connecticut College), 6-4, 1-6, 10-7, in the consolation bracket.

In doubles play, No. 2 seed Hansen and Hoover defeated Pontee and Jamison Steele (Vassar), 8-5, but lost a hard-fought battle to Natasha Brown and Jill Wexler (Amherst), 9-7. Wang and McCree lost their opening match to Colleen Donnelly and Rachel Rosman (Brandeis), 8-3. The duo then fell to Brett Davis and Rachel Waldman (Bowdoin) in the consolation bracket.
