MIT Surges Past Springfield, 8-1

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's tennis team continued to roll in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference action when it defeated Springfield College, 8-1, on Saturday. With the win, the Engineers improve to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

Mariah Hoover and Serena Lin led off the day with an 8-3 victory in the No. 1 doubles position. Joanna MacKay and Elaine Ni teamed up for an 8-6 win while Jusleen Karve and Jill Konowich defeated Angela Giles and Heidi Eidse, 8-1.

Ni was successful in her No. 1 singles match as she defeated Melissa Weinstein, 6-2, 6-1. Hoover did not drop a game in her 6-0, 6-0 win over Meghan Lilly. Shannon Desroches fell to Yi Wang by scores of 6-3, 6-1, while Konowich earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory. MacKay posted a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jenny Cameron, while Jusleen Karve fell, 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 to Giles.

In exhibition play, Shank and Wang recorded an 8-1 victory in doubles play. Shank went on to record a 6-4, 6-1 win while Karina Pikhart emerged with a 6-7 (3), 6-4, 10-7 victory.
