MIT Defeats Wheaton, 7-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second year in a row, MIT's women's tennis team defeated NEWMAC foe Wheaton College by a 7-2 margin. The Engineers, winners of their fifth straight versus the Lyons, improved to 5-1 overall and 5-0 in conference play.

Liz Denys and Anisa McCree led off a doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory in the No. 2 spot. Leslie Hansen and Mariah Hoover followed with an 8-2 decision while Katie Smyth and Emily Onufer edged out their counterparts, 9-7, in the No. 3 position.

Jenny Dohlman dropped only one game in her 6-0, 6-1 No. 6 singles victory to extend MIT's lead to 4-0. The Lyons got on the board with Denys' 6-1, 6-3 loss, but the Engineers bounced back with Hansen winning, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 5 slot, Karina Pikhart outlasted her foe, 7-5, in the opening set and then registered a 6-1 score to capture the victory. Hoover posted a 6-4, 6-3 win while McCree fell in a hard-fought battle, 2-6, 6-3, 10-8.

In exhibition doubles play, Kerry Weinberg and Dohlman lost, 8-6. The Engineers countered with victories by Smyth (8-3) and Emma Rosen (8-1) in singles compeition.
