MIT Falls to No. 13 Tufts, 7-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Facing its first nationally-ranked opponent of the season, the MIT women’s tennis team fell to local foe No. 13 Tufts University, 7-2, on Thursday. The loss was the first for the Engineers as their ledger lowered to 4-1 on the year.

In the No. 2 doubles position, Melissa Diskin and Karina Pikhart fell to Meghan McCooey and Jennifer Lavet by an 8-2 margin. Leslie Hansen and Anastasia Vishnevetsky outlasted Julia Browne and Edwina Stewart, 9-7, in the top spot as Yi Wang and Alex Hall were edged out, 9-8 (3).

In the most closely contested singles match of the day, Diskin lost a hard-fought 5-7, 6-4, 19-17 battle to Stewart in the No. 3 slot. Vishnevetsky picked up MIT’s second point courtesy of a 6-3, 6-0 victory over McCooey in the No. 2 position. Hansen was defeated, 6-1, 6-3, while Wang was topped, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 4 spot. Hall fell, 7-5, 6-2, as Pikhart dropped a 6-3, 6-2 decision in the No. 6 slot.
