CAMBRIDGE, MASS. - This past weekend, the MIT women's tennis team traveled to Amherst, Mass. to compete in the NEWITT Tournament. The Engineers faced some of the best players in New England, with several of their opponents finishing as flight champions or finalists.
In singles play, Serena Lin, seeded No. 4, fell to Kelsey Hughes (Bowdoin), 7-5, 6-1, in flight No. 1. In the next flight, Jaclyn Cichon lost to Katie Hudson (Amherst), 6-3, 6-0. Elaine Ni, the No. 3 seed in flight No. 3, was defeated by Laura Stein (Amherst), 6-1, 6-0. Emily Chen dropped her first-round match to Anna Erdheim (Colby), 6-3, 7-5. In flight No. 5, Mariah Hoover defeated Angie Bizzozero (Regis), 6-1, 6-1. She then fell to Monica Snyder (Amherst), 6-0, 6-1. Joanna MacKay posted a 7-5, 6-1, 1-0 (4) victory over Heather Bracken (Bates) before losing to Amy Berkman (Middlebury), 6-0, 6-2.
The No. 2 doubles team of Hoover and Lin had the best performance for Tech, advancing to the semifinals of their flight. They shutout Manners/Yaguchi, 8-0, and then allowed only one game against Biffinger/Bizzozero (Regis), winning 8-1. Hoover and Lin outlasted Binet/Ayres (Williams), 8-6, before falling to Roche/Berck (Middlebury), 8-5.
In the first flight of doubles action, Ni and MacKay lost to Kemp/Williams (Smith), 8-5. Cichon and Zandile Williams fell to D'Elia/Gray (Bowdoin), 9-8 (4) in a hard-fought match in the No. 3 doubles flight.
MIT will conclude its season this weekend at the NEWMAC Championship Tournament hosted by Smith College.
