Gatowski and Fisher Sweep NEWMAC Weekly Honors
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –The MIT women’s track and field squad swept this week’s New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) awards, as Alina Gatowski and Karin Fisher were named the NEWMAC Women’s Track and Field Athletes of the Week, respectively. It was the second such honor for Gatowski and the fourth overall for the program this spring.
Gatowski set a new school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championship in the process at Saturday's MIT Invitational. Running at 5,000 meters, Gatowski finished in 17:22.81, besting the old Institute standard by nearly 17 seconds. Gatowski had little competition in the race, as she topped the rest of the field by nearly two minutes, while that time currently ranks as the ninth-best in Division III this year.
Fisher cleared 11-8.50 feet to win the pole vault competition at the Spring Invite. The mark was good enough to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Championship and match her outdoor personal best. She currently sits in a tie for the 14th best mark in the country.
Gatowski and Fisher will look to help the Engineers, who are currently the No. 6 team in the nation, win their second straight NEWMAC Championship this weekend. Tech’s title defense begins Saturday, April 24 at 11:00 a.m. at Springfield College.
