SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Just three members of the MIT women's indoor track and field team took part in the first day of the two-day New England Division III Championships, which are being held at Springfield College. Seniors Jaclyn Konopka (Novi, Mich.) and Stephanie Birkhimer (Oneonta, N.Y.), and freshman Stephanie Guo (Houston, Texas) competed in the Pentathlon, with Konopka coming in second place with 3250 points, Guo finishing in fifth with 3160 and Birkhimer taking ninth with 2886 points.
To start the afternoon, Konopka ran a 9.32 in the 60m Hurdles, running the fastest split by one one-hundredth of a second. She threw the Shot Put the furthest of all her opponents with a distance of 32-05.5 and, in the High Jump, she jumped a 5-04.25, narrowly missing her own MIT record of 5-04.5. She had a 15-09.75 in the Long Jump and wrapped up the day with a time of 2:37.51 in the 800m.
Guo's 9.63 in the 60m Hurdles had her fourth right from the start of the Pentathlon. She went on to jump a 5-01/75 in the High Jump and threw a distance of 29-00.5 in the Shot Put. In the Long Jump, she jumped a 15-07 and, to end the afternoon, she ran the 800m with a time of 2:27.10, which was among the fastest of her competitors. Her 3160 points is a new MIT freshman record.
Birkhimer earned a personal record by over 200 points with her performance. She ran a 10.14 in the 60m Hurdles and jumped a 4-04.25 in the High Jump and threw a 30-03.75 in the Shot Put. She led the way in the Long Jump with her 16-10.5 and her 2:30.79 in the 800 was good for fifth.
MIT will return to action tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. for the final day of the Championships.
