CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - In this traditional season-opening dual meet matchup, Springfield College used its field event strength to best MIT, 84-73, on Wednesday evening. Being the eve of the last day of classes kept a few individuals away from the meet.
The meet scoring went back and forth throughout, with the cross country squad's dominance of the distance events being erased by the 1-2-3 finishes of the Pride in both throws. In addition, better depth in sprints and jumps was the difference for Springfield. MIT won both meet-ending relays amid spirited cheering.
Doria Holbrook won the pole vault with a height of 10' 7", setting a freshman record and putting her No. 4 on the Tech all time list. Allison Brown and Melinda Dooley each had solid showings on the vault, both moving onto the lists. Christine Fanchiang won the long jump (15' 1.75") and placed in the vault, dash, and hurdles, as well leading off the 4x200 relay. Freshman Caroline Gorman won the mile (5:35.96) and led off the 4x800. Andrea Staid (800 and 4x800 anchor) and Julia Espel (3000) were also winners for the Engineers. Staid took the 800 with a time of 2:26.97 while Espel posted 11:11.50 in the 3,000.
