Women’s Volleyball Splits at Stevens Invite

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women's volleyball team saw its record move to 12-9 following a 2-2 outing at the Stevens Ducks Invitational hosted by the Stevens Institute of Technology this past weekend. The Engineers fell to SUNY New Paltz (21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-5, 15-7) and Clarkson University (26-24, 25-16, 25-12) before defeating Union College (25-18, 28-26, 23-25, 25-15) and Montclair State University (25-9, 25-23, 25-19). The Cardinal and Gray's Sharon Hao was selected to the All-Tournament Team.

In MIT's five-set battle with New Paltz, Trinity Leonard compiled 13 kills, eight digs, two aces, and two blocks. Kelly Schulte added 12 kills while Cecily Joujon-Roche posted three blocks and two aces. Kristine Bunker contributed two blocks as Natasha Jensen totaled 18 digs and two aces. Hao tallied 31 assists and 13 digs while Katie Spielbauer collected a team-high 20 digs.

Against Union, Schulte led the Engineers' attack with eight kills, followed by Jenny Li (seven) and Tatiana Berger (five). Bunker notched three aces and two blocks while Kate Kelly earned a pair of aces. Spielbauer registered eight digs as Hao and Alyssa Rothman shared setting duties, finishing with 21 and six assists, respectively.

Li powered MIT with 13 kills, six digs, and three blocks versus Union. Leonard chipped in 12 kills, five digs, and three aces as Schulte recorded nine kills, a .348 hitting percentage, and three blocks. Joujon-Roche racked up eight kills and six blocks while Emma Gargus totaled six kills and two blocks. Jensen and Kelly both contributed two aces as Spielbauer tacked on six digs. Hao posted 28 assists and two solo blocks while Rothman dished out 12 assists and had a solo block.

In the sweep of Montclair State, Berger and Bunker both registered nine kills while Berger added five digs and two aces. Jess Fessler tallied eight kills, a .538 hitting percentage, four digs, and two aces as Rachel Hunt registered seven kills and three aces. Gargus totaled five kills, four blocks, and three aces while Li added three blocks. Spielbauer led the back row with 11 digs as Jensen contributed five of her own. Hao distributed 12 assists in the opening set while Rothman finished out the match with 21 assists.
