Records Fall as MIT Captures Quad Tournament Title

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the fifth time in six years, the MIT women's volleyball team earned top honors at the MIT Quad Tournament held this past weekend. With MIT, nationally-ranked No. 25 UMass Boston, and Lebanon Valley College each compiling a 2-1 tournament ledger, sets won-lost among the tied teams determined the final rankings. The Engineers came out on top with a 7-3 mark, followed by UMass Boston (7-4), and Lebanon Valley (6-4). Bates College rounded out the field with a fourth-place finish.

MIT (16-10) kicked off the tournament with a 25-15, 25-20, 25-21 win over Bates and then fell to UMass Boston, 20-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-20. The Engineers bounced back with a solid 30-28, 26-24, 25-18 victory over Lebanon Valley. Kelly Schulte was voted the Tournament MVP while Katie Spielbauer was picked for All-Tournament Team plaudits.

The Engineers also registered record-breaking performances in their battle with Lebanon Valley. Kristine Bunker's 12 blocks established a new Institute standard for blocks in a three-set match and tied the record for blocks in a match. As a team MIT compiled 16 blocks, setting a new mark for blocks in a three-set match.

In Friday's opener with Bates, Schulte tallied 10 kills, a .368 hitting percentage, five assists on seven setting attempts, and three blocks. Trinity Leonard posted 10 kills and two blocks as Cecily Joujon-Roche added seven kills, a .353 hitting performance, and two blocks. Jenny Li contributed seven kills while Bunker notched four blocks. Katie Spielbauer recorded 14 digs and two aces as Natasha Jensen chipped in seven digs and four aces. Sharon Hao registered the first of two double-doubles during the weekend as she finished with 28 assists and 12 digs.

Bunker had an efficient outing versus UMass Boston, posting nine kills on 11 errorless attempts for a .818 hitting percentage to go along with four blocks. Joujon-Roche racked up nine kills, a .318 hitting performance, and four blocks which included three solo stops. Li compiled 13 digs, 11 kills, and two blocks as Leonard recorded 10 kills and nine digs. Schulte posted six kills and two blocks while Spielbauer added 12 digs and two aces. Jensen collected 13 digs as Hao totaled 39 assists and 12 digs.

Li led the way for MIT in its sweep of Lebanon Valley with 14 kills while Schulte racked up 11 kills, a .360 hitting percentage, and eight blocks. Leonard tallied nine kills, a .348 hitting performance, six digs, three aces, and three blocks. Joujon-Roche chipped in three blocks and two aces as Spielbauer amassed 19 digs and two aces. Jensen added 13 digs while Jess Fessler bolstered the back row with eight digs. Hao dished out 36 assists in the win.
