Engineers Face Top New England Teams at Hall of Fame Tournament

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Competing against a trio of regionally-ranked squads, the MIT women's volleyball team emerged with a 1-2 ledger at the Hall of Fame Tournament held this past weekend. The Engineers (18-12) fell to No. 6 Middlebury College, 25-16, 25-23, 25-19, before defeating No. 7 Brandeis University, 25-19, 11-25, 25-23, 25-15. MIT closed the tournament with a 22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 loss to No. 2 Springfield College. Jenny Li represented the Cardinal and Gray on the All-Tournament Team.

Against Middlebury, Li had a team-high nine kills to go along with six digs and two blocks. Kristine Bunker posted six blocks and five kills as Cecily Joujon-Roche tallied five kills, three blocks, and two aces. Kelly Schulte contributed five kills and three blocks while Trinity Leonard notched 10 digs and two blocks. Natasha Jensen bolstered the defense with six digs as Alyssa Rothman dished out 22 assists.

In its win over Brandeis Li led MIT's balanced attack, totaling 10 kills and four blocks. Bunker registered nine kills, a .533 hitting percentage, and five blocks while Schulte racked up seven kills, six assists, and four blocks. Joujon-Roche and Leonard both had six kills and added three and two blocks, respectively. Tatiana Berger chipped in five kills as Katie Spielbauer amassed a team-high 20 digs. Jensen recorded nine digs and two aces while Jess Fessler posted eight digs. Sharon Hao tallied 17 assists, six digs, and five aces as Rothman contributed 21 assists and seven digs.

Berger had a solid outing in the Engineers' loss to Springfield, compiling 16 kills, a .367 hitting percentage, two blocks, and an ace. Li notched 15 kills, 10 digs, and three blocks as Schulte collected 10 kills, a .368 hitting percentage, and three blocks. Spielbauer picked up 11 digs and an ace while Fessler recorded another eight-dig performance. Joujon-Roche led the blocking corps with six stops as Bunker added two of her own. Rothman rounded out the squad with 42 assists and seven digs.
