NEW LONDON, Conn. – In a back-and-forth five-set battle, the MIT women's volleyball team fell to host U.S. Coast Guard Academy, 21-25, 25-19, 25-16, 15-25, 15-12, on Saturday afternoon. The Engineers (22-10, 6-3 NEWMAC), seeded No. 4 in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament, will host No. 5 WPI in a first round match on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m.
Sophomore Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) posted 11 kills, a .588 hitting percentage, and two blocks while junior Trinity Leonard (Mill Valley, Calif.) recorded 13 kills, five digs, and two blocks. Senior Kelly Schulte (Riverside, Calif.) totaled 10 kills, four blocks, and four digs as fellow classmate Cecily Joujon-Roche (Laguna Hills, Calif.) registered six kills, six blocks, and two aces. Sophomore Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) contributed five kills and two blocks. Junior Alyssa Rothman (Plainview, N.Y.) compiled 24 assists and two blocks as freshman Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) had 16 assists and five digs. Junior Katie Spielbauer (Lakeview, Mich.) powered the defense with 21 digs, followed by 11 from sophomore Jess Fessler (Shortsville, N.Y.) and nine courtesy of senior Natasha Jensen (Columbia, Md.).
