Engineers Battle at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Senior Nicole Gagnier (Atlanta, Ga.) earned All-Tournament Team honors as the MIT women's volleyball team compiled a 1-3 ledger at the Vassar College Invitational this past weekend. The Engineers (5-3) defeated SUNY Cortland (25-23, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25, 15-7) but fell to the host Brewers (19-25, 26-24, 25-23, 25-16), Stevens Institute of Technology (23-25, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18, 15-11), and NYU (25-15, 25-17, 25-21).

In the five-set opener with Cortland, freshman Megan Gebhard (Howell, Mich.) paced MIT with 17 kills while senior Kristine Bunker (Falmouth, Mass.) posted 10 kills, a .333 hitting percentage, and two blocks. Senior Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, Ill.) totaled eight kills, six digs, and two blocks as classmate Tatiana Berger (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) notched nine kills and six digs. Freshman Tori Wuthrich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) collected 14 digs and three aces while junior Angela Ha (Houston, Texas) generated eight digs and two aces. Freshman Lauren Uhr (Honolulu, Hawaii) had seven digs and three aces as Gagnier tallied 49 assists, five digs, and five kills.

Against Vassar, Gebhard registered a team-high 12 kills, followed by 10 kills and a .381 hitting performance by Hunt. Bunker tacked on eight kills and two blocks as junior Morgan Stewart (Powell, Ohio) earned two aces. Gagnier racked up 35 assists, 17 digs, and three blocks while junior Jenny Astrachan (Austin, Texas) recorded six digs and two blocks. Senior Jess Fessler (Shortsville, N.Y.) and Wuthrich rounded out the back row with eight and seven digs, respectively.

Berger posted 13 kills and 12 digs while Gebhard produced 19 kills and two blocks in MIT's five-set tilt with Stevens. Bunker notched 14 kills and a .565 hitting performance as Hunt had 11 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. Wuthrich amassed 21 digs and three aces while Fessler contributed 10 digs and five aces. Uhr bolstered the defense with 14 digs as Stewart earned four blocks. Freshman Jennie Glerum (Redmond, Wash.) chipped in two aces while Gagnier finished with 54 assists, 13 digs, and two blocks.

In the finale with NYU, Astrachan totaled seven digs and six kills as freshman Lara Markey (San Diego, Calif.) connected on all four of her hitting attempts. Bunker and Hunt both registered a pair of blocks while Stewart picked up two aces. Gagnier distributed seven assists as freshman Paige Studer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) notched 10 assists and two blocks. Wuthrich closed the weekend with 13 digs and three aces.

Next up for MIT will be its MIT Invitational on September 13-14 where it will face Bates College, Colby College, Endicott College, and Tufts University.
