Indianapolis, Ind. (November 6) – The nationally-ranked No. 21 MIT women's volleyball team learned it will square off with Maine Maritime Academy in the opener of the NCAA Tournament on Friday. Hosted by Johnson & Wales University, the Engineers will take the court at 3:00 p.m. for the program's 19th appearance in the tournament.
The meeting will be the second between both squads and first since they squared off in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. The Engineers prevailed with a 30-13, 30-6, 30-14 victory over the Mariners.
MIT qualified for a program-record fourth-consecutive NCAA Tournament after capturing its second NEWMAC Championship in a row on Sunday. As the No. 1 seed, the Engineers defeated No. 4 Wheaton College, 10-25, 25-15, 21-25, 25-20, 15-10, in the semifinals and then swept No. 3 Wellesley College, 25-23, 25-15, 25-21, in the title match.
Maine Maritime (20-12) secured its second straight North Atlantic Conference title and sixth overall. The Mariners swept No. 4 New England College, 25-12, 25-19, 25-17, in the semifinals before defeating No. 3 Colby-Sawyer College, 25-21, 14-25, 25-18, 25-13, in the championship.
In addition to the host Wildcats, the rest of the New England Regional bracket features Elms College, Tufts University, UMass Boston, Wellesley College, and Wesleyan University.
