CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In a non-conference women’s volleyball tri-match on Saturday, host MIT defeated Johnson & Wales University, 25-19, 25-21, 25-14, before falling to local foe Brandeis University, 19-25, 25-20, 25-23, 14-25, 15-13. Earlier in the day, Brandeis topped Johnson & Wales, 25-18, 18-25, 25-16, 25-18.

MIT’s Cathy Melnikow totaled 22 assists, eight digs, and two aces while Lindsay Hunting collected 15 digs. Natasha Jensen registered seven digs and two aces as Alex May added seven digs and a team-high six kills. Jenny Li and Allison Hamilos each recorded five kills while Li tacked on three blocks. Barden Cleeland bolstered the Engineers’ (5-1) performance with four kills and three blocks.
Alesandra Valentino and Catherine Bravo each racked up 12 digs as Bravo added eight kills for Johnson & Wales (0-6). Brittany Carrier dished out 11 assists in the loss.

Abby Blasco posted a double-double for Brandeis (3-0), compiling 26 assists and 18 digs. Piera Carfagno registered a team-high nine kills to go along with seven digs as Lorraine Wingenbach notched eight kills and 12 digs. Lauren Polinksy rounded out the Judges with 10 digs and three aces.
Catherine Bravo paced Johnson & Wales’ attack with 14 kills while totaling 11 digs. Kristen Gawrys posted 26 digs and seven kills as Audrey Warren totaled 18 assists and seven kills. Nikki Balchunas bolstered the Wildcats’ effort with six kills and eight digs.

Alex May paced MIT’s attack with 15 kills to go along with 12 digs. Jenny Li registered a team-high six blocks in addition to two aces as Barden Cleeland contributed 11 kills and four blocks. Cathy Melnikow tallied 42 assists, 15 digs, and three blocks while Lindsay Hunting amassed 21 digs and two aces. Allison Hamilos and Katrina Ellison finished with eight and seven kills, respectively, as Natasha Jensen earned two aces.
Lorraine Wingenbach had a solid outing, totaling 20 digs, 12 kills, and two aces while Piera Carfagno posted 10 kills, nine digs, and four blocks. Paige Blasco recorded 17 kills and 11 digs as Abby Blasco notched 42 assists and nine digs.
Next up for MIT will be the Ducks Classic hosted by Stevens Institute of Technology on Sept. 12-13. Johnson & Wales will compete in its own invitational the same weekend while Brandeis will return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 9 when it hosts Wellesley College.
