CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The MIT women's volleyball team defeated Smith College, 30-22, 30-24, 30-19, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match on Tuesday night. With the win, the Engineers improved to 7-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference while the Pioneers fell to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 in the NEWMAC.
Jenny Li and Katie Rowe both reached double figures in kills, finishing with 11 and 10, for MIT. Rowe powered the blocking corps with four total blocks as Katrina Ellison added seven kills and three blocks. Rose Zhong tallied a team-high 12 digs to go along with seven kills while Carrie Buchanan contributed 11 digs. Amanda Morris finished with 32 assists and eight digs as Cathy Melnikow (seven digs), Lindsay Hunting (six digs), and Emily Obert (six digs) rounded out Tech's defense. Five Engineers recorded an ace, including Barden Cleeland who connected on her first touch following a season-ending injury she suffered during her rookie campaign.
Mikal Minarich paced Smith's offense with nine kills as she collected nine digs. Lauren Martinez registered 16 assists and five digs while Brianne Connizzo notched a match-high 17 digs.
Both teams will continue conference play on the road on Saturday, Sept. 15. MIT will travel to Clark University while Smith will make the trip to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.
