Engineers Battle at Ducks Classic

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – In its first appearance at the Ducks Classic hosted by the Stevens Institute of Technology, the MIT women’s volleyball team squared off against a pair of nationally-ranked squads as well as two first-time opponents this past weekend. On Friday, the Engineers (5-5) fell to Frostburg State University (25-19, 25-18, 25-14) and No. 19 Haverford College (25-20, 25-18, 23-25, 25-14) in the first meetings with both programs. The next day, Johns Hopkins University edged out MIT, 25-19, 25-22, 31-29, as No. 20 Stevens defeated the Engineers, 25-20, 25-19, 23-25, 25-9. Lindsay Hunting represented the Cardinal and Gray on the All-Tournament Team and also eclipsed the 1,000-career dig mark, becoming the 12th player in Institute history to reach this milestone.

Katrina Ellison paced MIT’s attack against Frostburg State with seven kills. Alex May and Hunting each posted eight digs while May added six kills. Barden Cleeland contributed six kills as well while Jenny Li notched two blocks. Cathy Melnikow and Kelly Schulte totaled five digs apiece as Melnikow dished out 20 assists.

In the nightcap with Haverford, May registered 17 kills and 11 digs as Cleeland totaled seven kills and three blocks. Li collected six blocks while Allison Hamilos earned five kills in two sets. Hunting led the defense with 12 digs as Ellison and Kate Kelly added eight and seven digs, respectively. In two sets Schulte posted three blocks while Melnikow tallied 26 assists and 11 digs.

Li powered MIT’s attack versus Johns Hopkins with 14 kills and a .464 hitting percentage to go along with two blocks. Ellison compiled a team-high 16 digs, two blocks, and five kills as May notched 15 digs and nine kills. Hamilos chipped in five kills while Cleeland led the way with three blocks. Hunting recorded 13 digs and four aces as Melnikow distributed 31 assists.

May picked up her second double-double of the weekend on 15 kills and 11 digs against host Stevens. Li racked up eight kills, a .353 hitting percentage, and three blocks while Cleeland totaled 11 kills and a .421 hitting performance. Hunting collected 21 digs and three aces as Cecily Joujon-Roche earned three blocks in two sets. Melnikow registered 35 assists while Ellison bolstered the defense with seven digs.
