Women's Volleyball Tops Smith and UMass-Boston

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The MIT women’s volleyball team swept New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Smith College, 25-14, 25-20, 25-11, before defeating UMass-Boston, 22-25, 25-15, 25-17, 25-20, on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Smith outlasted UMass-Boston, 19-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-13, in a non-conference thriller.

Katrina Ellison had a solid outing for MIT (8-5, 2-0 NEWMAC), tallying eight digs, five kills, four aces, and two blocks. Barden Cleeland posted 10 kills and two blocks as Kelly Schulte added six kills. Cathy Melnikow, Jenny Li, and Lindsay Hunting each notched three aces while Melnikow dished out 28 assists. Hunting collected a match-high 10 digs as Alex May contributed seven digs.

Courtney Parker paced Smith (3-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) with six kills and one block while Laurel Belton picked up three aces. Lauren Martinez totaled 11 assists and two digs in the NEWMAC tilt.

Mikal Minarich posted 12 kills, nine digs, two blocks, and one ace for Smith while Courtney Parker registered nine kills, two blocks, and an ace. Lauren Martinez rounded out the Pioneers with 24 assists, three kills, and an ace.

Kate McWhorter powered UMass-Boston (7-6) with 24 kills as Molly Rattigan recorded five aces and four blocks. Megan MacAuley collected 29 digs while Cassy Hanneman distributed 43 assists.

Alex May paced MIT with 18 kills and 11 digs while Barden Cleeland contributed 14 kills and two blocks. Jenny Li tallied eight kills, five aces, and four blocks as Kelly Schulte posted nine kills and two blocks. Cathy Melnikow amassed 39 assists and 10 digs while Lindsay Hunting picked up nine digs and three aces. Katrina Ellison and Evelyn Cordner each dished out three assists as Ellison recorded a pair of aces and blocks.

Kate McWhorter led UMass-Boston with 16 kills and a block while Megan MacAuley racked up 26 digs. Cassy Hanneman totaled 29 assists and four aces as Ali McMinn bolstered the Beacons’ defense with one block.

MIT and Smith will continue NEWMAC play on the road on Tuesday, Sept. 23. MIT will travel to Springfield College while Smith will make the trip to Clark University. UMass-Boston will continue action on Wednesday, Sept. 24 at Worcester State College.
