CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second year in a row, MIT defeated Tufts University in the championship match of the MIT Women's Volleyball Invitational on Saturday. The Engineers swept Bowdoin College (30-22, 30-23, 30-15) and Wesleyan University (30-26, 30-21, 30-15) in pool play on Friday. In Saturday's semifinal, MIT outlasted Williams College (30-17, 32-34, 30-22, 26-30, 15-13) before blanking the Jumbos, 30-25, 30-18, 30-20, in the title tilt. Amanda Morris was named to the All-Tournament Team while Carrie Buchanan was selected as the Tournament MVP.
The Engineers (14-1) recorded a balanced scoring attack in their opener versus Bowdoin, with Rose Zhong, Katrina Ellison, and Katie Rowe each tallying eight kills. Barden Cleeland paced the blocking corps with five stops while Ellison added four total blocks. Morris notched a team-high 31 assists, 16 digs, and three aces in two games as Buchanan contributed 11 digs.
Rowe paced the Cardinal and Gray with 12 kills and seven blocks in the nightcap against Wesleyan. Jenny Li posted nine kills while Zhong contributed a team-high 14 digs to go along with eight kills. Buchanan bolstered the defense with 12 digs as Morris tallied 27 assists and five blocks. Lindsay Hunting, Rowe, and Buchanan each posted two aces.
In MIT's five-game thriller with Williams, Buchanan broke the Institute record for digs in a match with 51, eclipsing the previous mark of 38 set by Colleen Johns in 1992 and tied by Arlis Reynolds in 2005. Buchanan also became the ninth person in NCAA Division III history to surpass the 50-dig mark in a five-game match. Zhong and Cathy Melnikow both posted 20 digs while Zhong finished with 16 kills and six aces. Cleeland and Li each notched 12 kills as Cleeland registered a career-high 12 blocks. Rowe totaled 16 kills and five blocks while Ellison chipped in 11 kills and five blocks. Morris finished the match with 58 assists.
Zhong picked up her second double-double of the day with 13 kills and 12 digs in the championship match. Rowe and Cleeland both recorded nine kills as Rowe led the way with four blocks. Hunting and Buchanan each collected 12 digs while Morris dished out 43 assists.
