Engineers Compete in Tufts Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – MIT finished in sixth place following a 1-3 performance at the Tufts University Invitational held this past weekend. The Engineers (12-11) swept Polytechnic University (25-15, 25-14, 25-17) before falling to Colby-Sawyer College (25-23, 25-17, 25-22), Elmhurst College (18-25, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15, 15-12), and the host Jumbos (15-25, 25-22, 24-26, 25-22, 17-15). Alex May represented the Cardinal and Gray on the All-Tournament Team.

In two sets, May tallied six kills, four aces, and three digs versus Polytechnic. Barden Cleeland posted five kills, a .333 hitting performance, and three blocks while Jenny Li recorded five kills and a .455 hitting percentage. Lindsay Hunting collected seven digs, followed by six from Katrina Ellison as Kelly Schulte bolstered the defense with two blocks in one set. Cathy Melnikow and Natasha Jensen each registered five aces while Melnikow dished out 18 assists. As a team, MIT racked up 22 aces, falling one short of tying the Institute record.

May notched a team-high 13 kills and 10 digs against Colby-Sawyer. Cleeland picked up eight kills and two blocks while Li totaled seven kills and two blocks. Ellison contributed six digs and five kills as Schulte posted four kills in one set. Hunting collected nine digs and two aces while Melnikow distributed 32 assists.

Li and Cecily Joujon-Roche both tallied seven kills and four blocks while Li added eight digs in the Engineers’ match with Elmhurst. May registered 17 digs, 16 kills, and two aces as Ellison notched 14 digs and six kills. Hunting recorded 13 digs and five aces while Jensen contributed 11 digs. Melnikow finished with 41 assists, 12 digs, and three aces as Schulte added nine kills.

May tied the Institute record for kills in a match with 33 against regionally-ranked No. 1 Tufts. She also had a .475 hitting percentage, 20 digs, and two blocks. Cleeland posted 14 kills, a .444 hitting percentage, and two blocks while Li contributed 14 kills. Melnikow amassed 56 assists, 22 digs, and three blocks as Hunting collected 19 digs. Joujon-Roche notched six blocks and four aces while Ellison recorded seven digs and four blocks.
