CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the second year in a row, MIT did not drop a game en route to the Hall of Fame Tournament Championship. The regionally-ranked No. 1 Engineers improved to 30-1 following sweeps over Mount Holyoke College (30-17, 30-16, 30-18), Bowdoin College (30-18, 30-17, 30-18), No. 7 Tufts University (30-28, 30-27, 30-26), and No. 2 Williams College (30-26, 30-25, 30-28). Amanda Morris was chosen as the Tournament MVP while Katie Rowe was selected to the All-Tournament Team.
In its opener against host Mount Holyoke, Rose Zhong and Barden Cleeland paced a balanced attack with eight kills each and hitting percentages of .467 and .429, respectively. Jenny Li contributed six kills and a .417 hitting performance as Rowe added six kills and three blocks. Cleeland bolstered MIT's defense with five blocks while Cathy Melnikow collected a team-high 11 digs. Carrie Buchanan chipped in 10 digs as Lindsay Hunting equaled her career-high of seven aces. Morris and Piela shared setting duties, working two games apiece. Morris finished with 12 assists and three blocks while Piela dished out 18 assists.
Against Bowdoin, Li led the way with 11 kills and three aces as Rowe posted nine kills, two blocks, and a .421 hitting percentage. Cleeland added eight kills and two blocks while Katrina Ellison registered seven kills and two blocks as well. Zhong tallied 10 digs, seven kills, and three aces as Buchanan paced the back row with 17 digs. Morris distributed 34 assists while Hunting chipped in eight digs.
For the second time in three tournaments, MIT and Tufts squared off in a semifinal match. The Engineers held true to form with Rowe posting 12 kills and a team-high six blocks. Ellison notched 12 kills and four blocks while Li contributed 11 kills and three blocks. Buchanan amassed 18 digs, followed by 15 from Melnikow. Cleeland and Morris each tacked on three blocks as Morris finished with 39 assists and 13 digs.
In the title match versus Williams, Rowe recorded 12 kills, five blocks, and two aces. Morris tallied 34 assists, 11 digs, six kills on nine-errorless attempts (.667), and two blocks. Li compiled 12 kills as Cleeland contributed seven kills, five blocks, and a .357 hitting performance. Solid defensive performances by Buchanan (25 digs), Melnikow (10 digs), and Ellison (three blocks) helped seal the win.
