MIT Volleyball Receives GamePlan/AVCA Team Academic Award
July 26, 2007
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - MIT was the only college in the country to have its men's and women's volleyball teams qualify for the GamePlan/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. Initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, this award honors collegiate and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 mark on a 5.0 scale.
The college ranks produced 167 programs that met the requirements, including a record-setting 54 among Division III women's teams. Joining MIT on the list from New England was conference foe Mount Holyoke College along with Colby College, Newbury College, Trinity College, and Williams College. On the men's side, which included all three divisions, NYU and Vassar College made the cut in addition to MIT. Rising junior middle hitter Scott Pollom's alma mater, Cathedral High School (Ind.), also earned plaudits.
