Women’s Cross Country Takes Third at Keene State Invitational

KEENE, N.H. - Four freshman were among the top five finishers for the nationally-ranked no. five MIT women's cross country team, which finished third out of 12 teams at the Keene State Invitational on Saturday. Missy Showers was the top overall finisher for the Engineers in just the second race of her intercollegiate career.  

Showers completed the five-kilometer course in 19:34 to come in 13th overall. Sophomore Tania Morimoto came through the chute 10 seconds after Showers in 18th place. A large group of Tech harriers followed close behind. Marie Burkland (21st) was the first of four straight Engineers across the finish with a time of 19:50. Chandler Burfield and Lauren Allen both registered times of 19:54 while Maggie Lloyd was just three seconds back.

The Cardinal and Grey earned a total of 90 points, just five behind the host Owls. Amherst took the top spot with five of the top 10 finishers, totaling 25 team points.

MIT will compete in next weekend's All-New England Championship, racing against the top teams in the region from across Divisions I, II and III. The meet will be held at Franklin Park and the women's race begins at 12:45 p.m.
