WATERTOWN, Conn. – Alina Gatowski and Margaret Lloyd had a pair of outstanding performances to help lead the nationally-ranked No. 9 MIT women's cross country team to a third-place showing at the Connecticut College Invitational over the weekend. Gatowski took second overall and all five Tech harriers finished among the top 32 as the Engineers totaled 93 team points in their final competition before the post-season begins.
Gatowski's time of 22:26 was 13 seconds faster than the third-place runner and improved upon her season best at the six-kilometer distance by nearly 40 seconds. Lloyd crossed the finish in 23:11, good for seventh place. Sophomore Sarah Sprague posted a time of 23:46 to place 25th overall. Sherry Fu was two seconds behind Sprague, good for a standing of 27th. Olivia Papa was Tech's fifth-best finisher, coming through the chute in 23:52 and in 32nd place.
The Engineers will enter Championship competition in two weeks, with the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) meet on Saturday, October 30 at Moore State Park in Paxton, Mass. The women's Championship meet begins at 2:30 p.m. and is followed by the men's race at 3:15 p.m.
