MIT Sweeps NEWMAC Cross Country Honors for Second Straight Week
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – For the second consecutive week, a pair of MIT student-athletes collected both the men's and women's Runner of the Week awards from the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC). Brooke Johnson (Shoreham, N.Y.) and Daniel Harper (Naperville, Ill.) earned the weekly honors on Monday after MIT took home both the men's and women's team titles at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational on Saturday.
Johnson was the top overall runner at the UMass-Dartmouth Invite, crossing the finish over four seconds faster than her nearest competitor. The junior posted a time of 17:54.35 on the five-kilometer course and was the first of five Tech harriers in the top nine places.
Harper took second in the men's race with a time of 24:50.99. The senior helped the Cardinal and Gray capture the team crown with a total score of 31 points.
Last week, Benjamin Mattocks (Sharon, Mass.) and Alexandra Taylor (Harbor Springs, Mich.) were recognized by the conference following MIT's season opening Engineer's Cup meet.
