CUMBERLAND, Maine - MIT continued its strong start to the 2006 campaign by following up last week's victory at the Engineers Cup with an impressive first-place finish at the Bates College Cross Country Invitational. MIT scored 25 points in easily outpacing the host Bobcats (49) and Keene State (61) for the team title.
Freshman Maria Monks paced the MIT attack for the second straight week, earning runner-up honors with a time of 19:30 in the 5k race. Jennifer Adams was impressive for Keene as she raced away from the field in winning with a split of 19:00.
After yielding the third spot to Bates' Kathryn Moore, the Engineers powered past the competition by grabbing fourth through sixth. Fellow rookie Jacqui Wentz led the chase pack with a time of 19:57, while Jennifer Doyle and Liz Finn crossed fifth and sixth, respectively. Hana Adaniya closed out the Tech scoring with an eighth-place finish with Rachel Niehuus (11th) and Alisha Schor (12th) rounding out MIT's top seven.
Finn enjoyed a huge improvement on Saturday, finishing 30 seconds ahead of last week's pace, while Niehuus added more muscle to the Engineers' depth after making her regular-season debut.
