Women's Cross Country Shocks Field With Fourth-Place Finish at Pre-Nationals

Sept. 23, 2006

WEST CHESTER, Ohio - Freshman Maria Monks finished third overall in a stunning performance as she led MIT to a fourth-place team finish at the Pre-National cross country meet hosted by Wilmington College. At Voice of America Park, on the site of the 2006 NCAA Cross Country Championships, Monks paced the Engineers to one of their most impressive national finishes ever.

Monks (22:10) was unable to keep pace with SUNY Geneseo's top tandem, but she was able to break up the defending national champion's top three with a superb finish against senior Christy Fink. Sophomore Elizabeth Montgomery won the 6000-meter race with a fantastic time of 21:10.

Fellow freshman Jacqui Wentz broke the finish line 19th overall. Finishing in 22:51, Wentz turned in the third fastest time by a rookie, behind only Monks and Lauren Reich of DePauw University, who finished just one place and one second ahead of Wentz.

The Engineers got their next three in a bunch, led by sophomore Liz Finn, who finished 27th with a clip of 23:11. Sophomore Jennifer Doyle (23:14) finished in 29th, while senior Hana Adaniya (23:18) followed directly behind Doyle in the standings to wrap up a tremendous scoring unit for the Cardinal and Gray.
